Movement Is Apparent

Davis, CA. 2010.

Dance party at Megan's. Late, after everyone from the bbq had gone home. Somehow, we were all appropriately drunk and ready to dance in her kitchen. So we did. I took photos, some with flash, and some, like this one, without.

We danced, laughed, searched for better songs on her playlist. It was warm and comfortable and happy. Nothing was wrong. A few people had headlamps on their wrists and foreheads, making light trails through the dusk.

Bridging

On the train to Davis. 2010.

That's a lot of concrete. This is looking up at the Vallejo bridge, heading east. I love infrastructure.

Pouring Grain

Joal Fadiout (my best guess), Senegal. 2006.

We took taxis and buses and cars for hire down the rutted sandy roads of senegal. I can't remember the name of the town, but from looking at the maps, I think Joal Fadiout is likely. We stopped and walked around a bit, crossing a bridge to shell covered island cemetery. I tried to take photos without people noticing.

This woman was sifting the wheat from the shaft. She would poor the grain from one bowl to the other, letting the wind carry away the casings. The town, such as it was, sat behind me as I took this photo. Squat, cinderblock buildings, one telephone at the store, only cokes for sale. Dirt paths between the closely packed houses. Beautiful boats, long canoes with vertical bows and painted sides. A grey sky, muted with dust and haze, smeared by a strong warm wind that sucked your skin dry.

Old Beginnings

Petra, Jordan. 2006.

Sunset. The Petra ruins are in the rocks the sun in sliding towards. Lucy and her friend and I are standing on the roof of our hotel, smoking, talking, and trying to ignore the chilly breeze. Later, after dinner, I walked around the town and took a few pictures, but mostly just listened to the sounds.

Getting the Perfect Shot

Kings Canyon, CA. 2008.

Here's my dad, edging closer and closer to the white water, in order to line up the perfect shot down the canyon.

Great six day hike on the Rea Lakes Loop in July. Got back the day before the test for the job I have now. Almost blew it off to stay on the trail longer. Guess I'm kinda glad I headed home early.

Jessica, With Chewed Dot

505? I-5, near Williams? On the road. 2008.

Dots. Lots of Dots.

Jessica and I drove up to camp and bought candy for along the way. We talked and looked out the window, ate dots and talked. Bam, six hours past. I love it when you're so relaxed that you don't notice time going by. So happy in the moment.

I love Dots.
