wallflower
emeryville, ca. september 2011.
this building is going to be torn down, and is actually quite a nice building, but has seen too many years of neglect to be salvaged. the issue at this point is that there are homeless people living inside who would probably be crushed when the building fell down in the next earthquake. so down it comes now. in the meanwhile, this dandelion has somehow taken root in the mortar between two bricks.

two nevada scenes
eastern nevada. november 2009.
as i drove west, home, from utah. a warm afternoon as i crossed the border, and a frosty, fast dawn the next day, mid-state. the clouds, the colors, the rolling shadows and road. a dead coyote on the side of the road, frozen stiff. a pure, clean aloneness, so right in such an empty, open place. huddled grasses growing out of the road's shoulder. everything dry, crisp. lizards in the day sun, birds flying home–to where?–at dusk. a cold welcome, but the feeling of belonging just the same.

shadows and sand
abel tasman trail, new zealand. april 2011.
we started our hike at 5.30 pm and hiked into the falling dusk, watching the clouds change color over the water. by the time we got to our deserted campground, we had headlamps on and were ready for layers. after dinner, linda took a swim in the ocean and i took pictures of the rising full moon.

Leaving Beauty Behind
Banff. 2010.
The view as we drove away. Low sunlight, clinging fingers of fog. Dew still on each blade of grass. That rain-fresh smell.
The road, before us.
