point reyes. june 2013.

an epic hike: nine miles in three hours, including stops for photos, berry picking, and exploring the sea shore. my knee hurt for three weeks following the hike, so i rested it; now that i've started working out again, it feels much better. it's amazing how well nature heals. at first it feels like a big sponge that can absorb everything you're feeling and take it away, and then you realize that you feel better because you're where you belong.

i'm thinking of traveling to south america in a few months, and i'm excited to see the cities and work on the farms, but i'm also anticipating patagonia, the andes, and perhaps even antarctica. the bold, vast, empty places that feel like a strange new home.

Movement Is Apparent

Davis, CA. 2010.

Dance party at Megan's. Late, after everyone from the bbq had gone home. Somehow, we were all appropriately drunk and ready to dance in her kitchen. So we did. I took photos, some with flash, and some, like this one, without.

We danced, laughed, searched for better songs on her playlist. It was warm and comfortable and happy. Nothing was wrong. A few people had headlamps on their wrists and foreheads, making light trails through the dusk.

Jessica, With Chewed Dot

505? I-5, near Williams? On the road. 2008.

Dots. Lots of Dots.

Jessica and I drove up to camp and bought candy for along the way. We talked and looked out the window, ate dots and talked. Bam, six hours past. I love it when you're so relaxed that you don't notice time going by. So happy in the moment.

I love Dots.

In A Green World

Collegeville, PA. 2007.

This is Maya, very focused on her croquet, on a vast green lawn. As I recall, this game disintegrated pretty fast into petty squabbles and grand gestures of croquetic nihilism. But a good time was had by all.

A Graduation. So Proud.

Ithaca, NY. 2009.

Walking into the landscape architecture school, for Dana's graduation last May. I like the just-rained-on-us sky visible under the building, and the tree standing solitary on the left, in front of the square windows. I like the quiet air of pride and I-never-doubted-it celebration we held around us as our large group waltzed into the small space and ate all the appetizers. Like we owned the place.

Blurry Start

Pomona, CA. 2009.

Somehow seems appropriate that this isn't in focus. It probably matches their memories of that day: in motion, soft edges, beautiful but unclear. Good energy.

This was the last photo I took that day, before I surrendered to being in the experience and not the person behind the camera. As much as I love taking pictures, I'm sometimes saddened to realize that I was busier recording an event than watching it. I don't want all my memories to be of the pictures I took.

This wedding was perfect, and I'm glad I can recall every well-thought detail.

Bombastic

I miss my level!

Bomba, the other half of Bombassidy, is in Ecuador studying gardens in small villages. She's amazing, and clearly looks great with a buzzed head. I can't wait until she gets back.
